WonderWork is a brand new charity with hundreds of years of experience in both the for-profit and non-profit world.
Most of the members of the senior management team helped create and manage Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft charity, for more than a decade. Our plan is to leverage the lessons learned and our past success to help children suffering with other major problems that, like clefts, can be solved through quick and inexpensive surgery.

Co-Founder & CEO
Brian is the Co-Founder and CEO of WonderWork. Previously, Brian co-founded Smile Train, the world’s largest cleft charity and served as its CEO for 10 years. At Smile Train, Brian and his team pioneered a new approach to providing free surgery in developing countries by empowering local doctors to solve the problem themselves. He also leveraged his 30-year marketing background to build one of the most cost-effective fundraising programs in the nonprofit world, raising more than $750,000,000 for clefts in less than 10 years. Today, Smile Train has more than 2,500,000 donors and has provided free, life-changing surgery for more than 900,000 children. Brian is a graduate of Harvard University. He co-founded Schell/Mullaney advertising in 1990, a high-tech marketing agency which was sold in 1996 to CKS, America’s first publicly-held, interactive advertising agency. He served on the board of Smile Train from its inception to June 2012. Currently he serves on the board of the International Center for The Disabled. In 2008, Brian was executive producer of the Oscar-winning Documentary Short, Smile Pinki and in 2004, he was the first foreigner ever to be awarded the prestigious Soong Ching Ling Camphor Tree award in China.

Theodore L. Dysart is a vice chairman with Heidrick & Struggles where he is a leader in the global Board of Directors Practice and an active member of the CEO search practice. Ted is responsible for senior-level executive search assignments and is a functional specialist, working exclusively on board, CEO and succession planning engagements. He has placed more than 500 executives on the boards of Fortune 500, mid-cap and private companies. BusinessWeek ranked him as one of the 150 most influential head hunters in the world, Executive Search Review named him one of six “executive recruiters to watch” in 2004. In 2007, 2008 and 2010, he was named to the Directorship 100, a listing of the most influential individuals in corporate governance by Directorship magazine.
Tata Motors Ltd, Mumbai, India
Ravi Kant holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and a Masters in Science from the University of Aston, Birmingham, UK. He was conferred with an Honorary D.Sc. by the Aston University, in Birmingham in July 2008. Ravi is an Honorary Industrial Professor at the University of Warwick, UK. He has wide and varied experience in the manufacturing and marketing field, particularly in the automobile industry. Ravi has been with Tata since July 2000. He served as Executive Director (Commercial Vehicle Business Unit) and as Managing Director of the Company since July 2005. On June 1, 2009, Ravi retired from his Executive position and is currently the non-executive Vice Chairman of Tata Motors.
John J. (J.J.) Coneys
Former Vice Chairman
JJ Coneys recently retired as vice chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Over a 37-year career with the firm, he led PwC’s international tax group and the entertainment, media and communications practice and was deputy tax leader for the U.S. firm. His core competencies include Board Governance, Legislative & Regulatory Compliance, Sarbanes Oxley Oversight, Innovation Strategy Leadership, and Business Operations.
Hana Fuchs, Chief Financial Officer
Hana has more than 35 years of finance and audit experience in both the non-profit and for-profit world. Before joining our team, she was an integral member of the team that created and built Smile Train into the world’s largest cleft charity. As VP of Finance and Administration of Smile Train, Hana helped manage one of America’s most respected and popular charities which, during her tenure, raised more than $700,000,000 and helped provide more than 700,000 surgeries.” Prior to Smile Train, she worked at Avon Products for more than 20 years and then at Sesame Workshop, as Vice President and Corporate Controller.
DeLois H. Greenwood, Chief Program Officer
DeLois has been helping provide surgical care for poor children in developing countries for almost 30 years. From its inception, DeLois was an integral member of the team that created and built Smile Train into the world’s largest cleft charity. In her role as Vice President, DeLois managed a global staff and a network of over 1,000 partner hospitals in 80 countries, delivering over 100,000 surgeries a year. Working closely with the Medical Advisory Board, she oversaw the development of a global electronic medical records system and implemented safety and quality protocols that assured the delivery of safe, life-changing surgery. DeLois has dedicated her life’s work to helping the poor receive surgical care so that no child in need is ever turned away.
Karen Lazarus, Director of Strategic Projects
Karen’s position as Director of Strategic Projects of WonderWork is the perfect place for her to utilize her experience in project management and expert organizational skills to help build this exciting, new charity from the ground up. As part of the team that created and transformed Smile Train into the world’s largest cleft organization, Karen not only helped launch the charity, but over a 10-year period, she nurtured its growth. She helped build an effective infrastructure and assisted in developing worldwide marketing and fundraising activities to further the charity’s mission of helping more than 100,000 children every year. Karen is a graduate of Vassar College.
Michele Sinesky, Director of Donor Relations
Michele has a master’s degree in Special Education and has spent her professional life helping children in need. In 1999, she left public education to pursue a career in the not-for-profit world. As the Manager of Donor Relations at Smile Train, she traveled extensively throughout the US, assisting donors with special fundraisers. The proceeds from these events provided free surgery for thousands of poor children who had no other hope of receiving the surgery they so desperately needed. Now, as the Director of Donor Relations, she is thrilled to have another opportunity to help more children than she ever thought possible.
Elaine Patafio, Direct-Response Marketing Director
For over two decades, Elaine has enjoyed an exciting career in advertising developing direct marketing communication strategies for top domestic and global brands such as American Airlines, Pella Windows, Sony Vaio, AAA, Vonage and Citibank. Prior to joining our team, she was with a consultancy firm that fully managed the direct marketing fundraising efforts for The USO. Excited to work with creative and strategic minds, Elaine has always been part of teams responsible for marketing strategy and implementing tactics and has been successful meeting year-end revenue goals.
Michael Schell, Creative Director
Mike has spent more than 40 years in advertising where he worked on many award-winning accounts such as General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Colgate, Hallmark and Frito-Lay. From 1998-2011, he provided creative direction and brand development for Smile Train for its advertising and marketing efforts. Mike joins WonderWork as its Creative Director and has already designed its beautiful, new logo.
Janet Huang, Senior Marketing Manager
Janet has over 10 years of experience in marketing and product management. With a diverse industry background, Janet has worked in publishing, advertising, entertainment and small entrepreneurial ventures. She is thrilled about her current role in non-profit and helping our mission of providing life-saving surgery in the developing world. Janet is a graduate of New York University.
Nicole Macagna, Development Associate
Nicole brings to WonderWork varied experience in both the private and non-profit sectors. Her previous work in human development spans issues ranging from food security to women’s rights to economic development, both in the US and abroad. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Bennington College and a master’s in international relations, with a focus on global health, from Syracuse University.
Ujjal Bhattacharya, Program Officer, India
Ujjal is based in Mumbai, India and has 12 years of experience in the Indian nonprofit sector. He also served as a GIS consultant at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. He brings core competencies in program management, logistics, fundraising and general administration skills. Ujjal holds a masters degree in social science from M.S. University of Baroda and is currently working on his MBA. He is passionate about our mission and excited to contribute towards our program growth in India. Ujjal lives in Mumbai with his wife, a scientist, and their young daughter.
